Hello and welcome to Green Your Thumb!
This site exists to encourage and aid those of us who wish we had been born with a “green thumb.” I consider myself a recovering brown thumb, as it were. Here, we will share ideas and hacks to make the dream of growing plants a reality, even when you think that just maybe you have killed one too many to keep trying. You haven’t. If you’ve always dreamed of having beautiful living indoor plants, or of growing your own food, I am here to tell you that you CAN! If I can do this, you can do it. You can do this! We will walk this path together. Come, join me!
HELLO, MY NAME IS HOPE, AND I’M A RECOVERING PLANT KILLER
Growing up, I loved the idea of gardening. As a very young child, I enjoyed helping my mom in her garden. But life and added children got the best of my mom, and out the backyard vegetable garden went. She did keep flowers around, but life got more and more busy, and I thought I had better things to do than learn about flowers from my mom. Oh, how I regret that now.
I come from a family of gardeners – my mother and my grandmother both were very good at growing plants of any kind. One would say they each had a green thumb. My dad was a very meticulous keeper of beautiful and amazing bromeliads. My sister is a horticulturalist. So, where did my green thumb end up?
Having been an adult now for a couple of decades, I have been determined to reclaim my roots (pun intended) and find and grow my green thumb. It has been a bumpy road with far too many brown plants along the way, but I am now the proud owner of many indoor plants (which has been my dream). Furthermore, I have successfully grown food for my family (both indoors and out), which is one of the most rewarding and exciting things I can think of. My children get excited about it, too!
I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO THIS.
I mean it. You can grow plants. You can surround yourself with plants, if that is your wish. You can grow your own food and enjoy a salad that was grown, picked and prepared by you, or make a soup from potatoes and squash you just washed the fresh dirt from, and boy is it rewarding! You can do this. Let’s do it together.
JOIN ME.
I am on a journey toward “greening” my thumb, and I’d like you to come along. Life is always better together, and going it alone is not the way I want to do things. Do you? So, if you have a dream like mine, you are just who I am looking for. Let’s encourage one another and discover new things together. Let’s share ideas, frustrations, dreams, hacks, and success stories! Let’s not accept our brown thumbs and just move on. We would be missing out on so much.
You see, I have had this little nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach (or is it my heart?) that keeps telling me, “you were made for this.” And I want so desperately to believe that little voice. Yes, I was made for this. And perhaps you were, too.
If, while here, you ever have questions or want to share something, please leave your comments. I’d love to hear from you.
Wishing you very green blessings,
HOPE
